What is Voilà®?

Voilà® has been created to provide the motel industry of New Zealand with a service providing fast and reliable Internet in the units at a reasonable price.

The business model is a "pay as you use", whereby each motelier pays a small fixed fee for each of its guests connection in exchange for the use of the brand, the support of their guests 7 days a week, and the maintenance of the installation over time.

Why is this business model such a good deal for the moteliers?

The answer is Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). For a typical 18 units property whose owners decide to buy a wireless solution outright, our evaluation of the TCO is around $3,800 per annum to provide a professional service to the guests.

Indeed there are out there some mickey mouse and other number 8 wire solutions where the owners would call upon their kids to fix the thing and try to provide support themselves when the need to support coincides with the check-in period. This is definitely not our clientele.

Elements of the TCO

Cost per year

Assumption

Cost of the hardware

$1,500.00

Assuming a 3y life

Cost of the installer

$480.00

$80 per hour

Charge back travel cost for the installer

$100.00

$100 average travel cost (fuel, meals, accommodation)

Professional support to the guests

$1,296.00

20 minutes per guest @ $60 per hour for 10% of the guests using the service, i.e. 20% of the rooms at 50% occupancy

Maintenance: hardware

$500.00

Assuming 1 fault per active component every 3 years, with 5 components per installation, outside 1y guarantee

Maintenance: labour for hardware support

$260.00

Assuming 2 hours + travel cost

Maintenance: interference

$660.00

Assuming 1 interference twice a year, 1 hour of diagnostic and fix, plus amortisation of the tool

Total of the costs per year

$3,796.00

Factoring a third of the cost of the hardware per annum

Our solution comes to a fraction of that cost because:

  • it has been designed and implemented to take into consideration the constraints of the New Zealand buildings,
  • it uses highly reliable hardware rather than consumer electronics in order to minimise the travels and the maintenance,
  • it requires less support and less maintenance because every incident enters our improvement process to find a proper response driven by cost-effectiveness and quality.

What are the other benefits?

In addition to the cost consideration, Voilà® has come to be recognised as a service of quality that guests keep using over time. Unlike many competitors, this statement comes with facts and figures:

  • We believe we have a very high level of returning customers: on a given month, 35% of our local users have used Voilà® in the past,
  • Over 2008, the average number of guests who used Voilà® on any given site has increased by 52%.

Actually Voilà® is not a cost for our customers: this is another source of revenue.

Conclusion

This success is only achievable in the context of a fully integrated solution where the operator is actually part of the whole process, is able to influence the marketing of the brand and the performance of the delivery, and is genuinely interested in providing the best possible service to the end users.

Our customer base is made of "core" moteliers, people who are moteliers at heart, who have been in the motel industry for longer than the average 3 years turnover. That is another gauge of the quality of our value proposition.
